Jeff Koons’ Fabricator is Latest Casualty of the Recession

Balloon Dog by Jeff Koons

A sad day for people who like gigantic art multiples. @theartmarket tipped us off to this story about art fabricator’s Carlson & Co. becoming the next casualty of the economy’s effect on the contemporary art market.

The company, based in San Fernando, California, was founded in 1971. It became one of the best-known resources for artists seeking to produce complicated, large-scale and frequently costly artworks. “Many artists trying to make work that involves high-tech and precise execution would go to Carlson and they could often figure things out that no one else could,” said New York art adviser Allan Schwartzman. The firm fabricated some of the most technically challenging artworks created during the six-year rise of contemporary art prices which began in 2002.

Carlson is perhaps best known for Jeff Koons’ Balloon Dog sculptures which are valued in excess of $20 million. The firm was in the process of constructing a $25 million “70-foot-long replica of a 1943 steam locomotive, designed to dangle from a crane, outside the Los Angeles County Museum of Art” when it closed.

Today’s Toy Sequels

Uglydoll Action Series 2

Today’s mail brought even more toy goodness. Sequels aren’t always awesome, and that’s pretty much a fact. However, these two series have upped the ante for their second coming. Uglydoll Action Figures Series 2 and Droplets Series 2 both feature new characters and new colors. But where they really get the props is in the packaging. Unlike blind-boxed UAF series 1, UAF series 2 are all individually window-boxed. (As an additional eco-friendly bonus, the windows are made with recycled PET.) And speaking of the environment, Droplets come in reusable cloth pouches inside recyclable cardboard boxes. Good job, guys. Both new series will be available in the Neon Monster shop in San Francisco and online shortly!

Amanda Visell’s Tic Toc Apocalypse Toys

Amanda Visell's Tic Toc Apocalypse Toys by Kidrobot

We had a little fun this morning unboxing a few of Amanda Visell’s mini-figures. Luckily for us, “the creatures, demigods, and harbingers of doom” know they’re among friends, so we’ve (at least temporarily) staved off the impending Tic Toc Apocalypse. Although I’ve got a few issues with excessive packaging in this series (if you’ve opened one of the Poopicorns, you know what I’m talking about), I think this is one of the better-executed artist-driven mini-series I’ve seen from Kidrobot lately. If you liked Joe Ledbetter’s Finders Keepers series, this has a similar vibe.

It’s definitely a very brown series. In house we’ve got collectors who swear by pink, black and green. I’ve met a blue guy. I’ve yet to meet anybody who feels brown is a dealbreaker in a good way. But looking past the color theory…BATS AND GNOMES! It’s also very authentic to the ever-expanding Amanda Visell universe. And it’s fun to have the different characters interact. As in, “Hey look at that Gnome riding a Centaur!” (Maybe I should Tweet that?)

Another little in-house game we’re playing this morning is to see if we can steal KFC’s trending thunder by using “double down” in as many posts as possible. (Jeremy kicked it off here.) I’d like to offer you the opportunity to “double down” your discount on a case of Amanda Visell’s Tic Toc Apocalypse. We always offer full Kidrobot cases at 10% off, but right now you can double down by using our “SXSW” coupon code for an additional 10% off. That’s 20% off! Stash those extra dollars for when the real apocalypse arrives, OK? (Zombies only take cash.) Browse our selection of Amanda Visell mini-figures and the new Zebracorn Dunnys here.
