Graphic Attack: Graffiti and Design Group Show

Graphic Attack at 1AM SF

If one piece at Graphic Attack could speak for the entire show, it’s the mural outside 1AM SF by Queen Andrea that says “San Fran….NYC..AOK.” Ironically, just a few hours after (and a bridge away from) Friday night’s opening, I came across this piece at Rob Bowen’s Magnanimous show in Oakland:  a reminder of where east vs. west coast beefs can lead.

There was a good vibe in the gallery, or as my more urban friends might say, “it was poppin’”. For some gallery-goers and street artists,  seeing graffiti framed, arranged and hanged on pristine museum-like walls for the first time can be a confusing experience. The 1AM SF crew (props to Dan, Anna and Roman) and curator Queen Andrea did an excellent job of blending the two worlds.

I enjoyed this wall by Queen Andrea. While I was viewing the work, feeling like the whitest guy in the house, I paused to do a quick twitpic of her “Hot and Flashy” canvas.

I spent a while taking in all of the components of this wall by Greg Haberny. There’s some clever work here. Apparently, you may find some of Greg’s installations on NY streets…

Morning Breath

Morning Breath

Being a writer (pen and paper, not can and street), I always appreciate the use of text and fonts in the works of Morning Breath. They had a few silkscreen prints for sale, too.

Cycle

Cycle

Cycle is another artist for whom Graphic Attack acted as my introduction. I like what he’s doing with color and collage.  Click through for some of the usual suspects (ie. Shepard Fairey) and a few more of the pieces that caught my eye. A handful more images from the show will be up on this Street Art Flickr Collection. If you’re in the area, the show is up at 1AM SF through June 19th. Check it out.

Sit on Some Inspiration: Street Artists Bomb Eames Chairs for Charity

EAMES INSPIRATION

Barney’s New York always has the most fantastic (and sometimes scandalous) window displays.  Yesterday, they set the blogosphere aflutter after installing an array of iconic Eames molded plywood lounge chairs that had been “bombed” by some of New York’s finest graffiti and street artists. In addition to being an eye-catching excuse to window-shop, EAMES INSPIRATION is also a charity auction benefiting Operation Design’s New York Educational + Design initiative.

Curated by Billi Kid and  Luna Park, EAMES INSPIRATION features work by: Aakash Nihalani, Billi Kid, Blanco, Cake, Celso, Cern, Damon Ginandes, DarkcloudDavid Cooper, Elbow-Toe, James and Karla Murray, Joe Iurato, Matt Siren, NohJColey, Peru Ana Ana Peru, Skewville, Sofia Maldonado, Stikman, UR®New York and Veng.

Bidding began yesterday at $1000 per chair here. You can visit the chairs at Barneys on Madison Avenue at 61st Street now through June 1st. Check out more views of the chairs via Billi Kid here and a short interview with Kid and Blanco here. Or, thanks to our anonymous insider, you can view the chairs from the comfort of your own chair by kicking back and clicking through.

Bay Area Street Art Canvases

gats_canvas

If you live in the Bay Area (and specifically the East Bay), you should recognize these icons of local street art. If you’re not from around here, or you don’t get out much to look at walls and street signs, Endless Canvas has been chronicling San Francisco, Berkeley and Oakland graffiti culture since 2008. The web and print zine now presents the opportunity to own one of two ubiquitous emblems: a piece by GATS (Graffiti Against the System) and a canvas featuring STAR PIG.

The GATS piece is an 18×18″ 8-color serigraph with spray paint limited to 13 stretched canvases. The STAR PIG canvas is an 18×18″ aerosol, ink and serigraph limited to three of four colors, all with variations. Both artists are no strangers to the East Bay news. Star Pig is an “Anti-Police Street Propaganda Campaign that has been going strong since 2001.” The local paper even quoted Star Pig for an interesting multi-page article about graffiti vigilantism.

GATS really gets into some interesting places (and pieces). Work has shown up from Brooklyn to Rome. I really think GATS could make a killer vinyl figure, so if anybody knows anybody who knows GATS, send word! Above is a GATS wall in Oakland, and below, a street sign stickered by GATS, STAR PIG, and if you look closely, the Doodlesplatter posse.
