SDCC Toy Artists Signing Schedules

SDCC Comic-Con 2010 Thursday & Friday Toy Cultyard Artist Signings

After making this map of the Toy Growers Cultyard yesterday, it seemed like it might also be handy to make “at-a-glance” versions of the SDCC 2010 toy scene artists’ stalking signing schedules. I’m sure there’s a few typos, and afterall, everything is subject to change. If you click the images, you can print out hi-res 8×10 versions perfect for scratching out errors and strategizing how to best tackle your afternoon. Brad Smith also created a pretty comprehensive list of SDCC happenings over at the KRonikle, too. SEE YOU IN SAN DIEGO!

2010 Comic-Con Map of the Toy Growers Cultyard

2010 Comic Con Map of the Toy Growers Cultyard

By now, everybody’s got their own list of Comic-Con 2010 must have toys, but do you have your entrance strategy? Here’s some help. This map of the Toy Growers Cultyard (with a handful of notable toy allies highlighted on the outskirts of the neighborhood) should assist you in plotting the path of least resistance (aka fewest elbows in the ribs) as you make your mad dash to DKE, Dragatomi, Gargamel/Grass Hut, Hi-Fructose, Kidrobot, Munky King, Rocketworld, Rotofugi, STRANGEco, Super7, tokidoki, Toy Tokyo, Uglydolls,  Zerofriends or wherever your feet (and the involuntary grip of the herd) transport you. Click the image above to view a hi-resolution jpeg formatted to standard landscape-oriented letter size paper. Or click HERE to download a PDF. Feel free to share and distribute this map. If you see any errors on the map, please leave a comment below on the blog! If you see the guy in the lower right corner, please say hello! See you all in San Diego!

The Art of San Francisco Crime

San Francisco Crime Visualizations by Doug McCune

I’m a sucker for infographics and data visualizations. To create these raised-relief maps, Doug McCune used a full year of San Francisco crime data from 2009. The maps show a visual rendering of crime peeks in particular neighborhoods of San Francisco.

You should check out the full data set on Doug’s blog here. Beyond the obviously interesting nature of the way this information is presented, I found the disclaimer worth quoting:

These maps were generated from real data, but please don’t take them as being accurate. The data was aggregated geographically and artistically rendered. This is meant more as an art piece than an informative visualization.

I agree that these maps exist dually in the data and art worlds. I decided to take two of the maps into Photoshop and overlay them with a map of San Francisco neighborhoods. As you can see from these two visualizations, Neon Monster HQ (located in Noe Valley) is looking good on prostitution and narcotics crimes! Go us!

Hat tip to Sergey Safonov all the way in Moscow for pointing me to these San Francisco maps!
