Bigshot Toyworks is All Over the Place (in a Good Way)

Jeff Soto and Travis Louie at Hi-Fructose
Jeff Soto and Travis Louie at Hi-Fructose

Bigshot Toyworks was everywhere this year at SDCC (DKE, Hi-Fructose, Mike Mignola’s booth…) and their productions crossed many mediums (vinyl, resin, wood, plush…).  Sharing some similarities with DOUBLE SUPER’s showcase at SDCC, Bigshot showed off several sculptural works–playful in nature if not necessarily in practice. Perhaps, like art itself, the definition of toy is really best left to the beholder?

Whether you want to call it an art toy, a sculpture, a bust or something else entirely, Bigshot is making 3D “objects” from 2D imagery by Jeff Soto, Travis Louie, Brian Taylor, Nathan Jurevicius and Mike Mignola, and as a collector of such objects, I find it exciting. Also exciting: exchanging compliments in person with the man who calls the big shots: Klim Kozinevich. Check out some of the Toyworks I found walking the aisles.

Scarygirl Resin Statues from Bigshot Toyworks

Resin Scarygirl by Nathan Jurevicius and Bigshot Toyworks

Wow! Resin fans, prepare to be stoked because Bigshot Toyworks is about to release a resin version of Nathan Jurevicius‘ much-loved character, Scarygirl. Readers of this blog will recall we are big fans of Nathan and our first Meet Your Maker interview featured Mr. Jurevicious. I like how Bigshot describes the direction of this figure:

Bigshot Toyworks is pleased to bring Scary Girl to life as a more “adult” collectible, with a brand-new sculpt by Scott Wetterschneider and a simply incredible paint application that pushes Scary Girl beyond being a “toy” and well into being a true art object.

The solid resin statues measure 7” x 5” x 3.5” and weigh in at nearly 1.5 lbs, the Scarygirl statue will be available in both bronze and full-color. The two editions (painted bronze and full-color) will be limited to 100 pieces worldwide and available here from Bigshot Toyworks and limited retailers for $85. The expected release date is early July. Looking forward to it!

Meet Your Maker: Nathan Jurevicius

Meet Your Maker: Nathan Jurevicius on Neon Monster

A few weeks ago, we had that awesomesauce opportunity to visit STRANGEco’s warehouse and procure some sweet selections for Wondercon (and our online fans). Dipping back into the mid-2000s, we noticed a preponderance of figures by Australian artist, Nathan Jurevicius. Lining the shelves tucked amongst tokidoki and mixed up with Mars-1 were the tell-tale work of Nathan J: A Scarygirl here, a Treedweller there, even a rad (albeit a bit thrashed up) Dr. Maybe.

If we consider toys the way that archaeologists carbon-date eras,  these Nathan Jurevicius figures hail from the Flying Cat period. The now-defunct Hong Kong toy company put out some great, inspired character toys in the early-mid 2000s before burning out. Along with his contemporaries from Flying Cat, Nathan J has explored the Scarygirl universe in other media forms like gamesgraphic novels and an upcoming feature film. We like that despite these other ventures, he still appreciates the art form of toys, and continues to produce figures (like the Swamp Folk mini series and Peleda).

We thought we’d kick off our new Meet Your Maker series with Scarynathan himself.

Neon Monster: What year did you start making toys?

Nathan Jurevicius: I started developing the designs for toys around 2001.

Did you have the Scarygirl universe conceptualized before you ever made the toys?

She [Scarygirl] was originally an interactive concept that was being created in Australia before a toy. At the time it was just Scarygirl and Toycat going on mini adventures trying to win the hearts of difficult peers. At each level, you would be rejected or accepted by them, depending on how you went. This version of the game never materialized, but a 30-part comic was created at the same time as the first toy (Scarygirl) was being made.

OK, I have to ask this: what the heck happened to Flying Cat? Read the rest of this entry »

More STRANGEco Warehouse Finds!

Neon Monster STRANGEco Warehouse Finds

Remember our visit to STRANGEco’s warehouse? Frankly, we can’t get it out of our minds. It was like Disneyworld with toys. Oh wait, Disneyworld has toys. It was like Disneyworld with designer toys. Better.

This afternoon, we’re busting out round 2 of our warehouse finds with some really incredible figures from the mid 2000s. On the list:

Octocity Scarygirl by Nathan Jurevicius. This was a limited edition of 2oo pieces produced by Flying Cat in 2005. It’s one of our personal favorite Scarygirls, as it’s the one with the octopus dress. We have the figure marked #100, too.

More Scarygirl minis! These are all-black very rare versions of Snow and T-Bear. 100 pieces of these came out in 2004, and we haven’t seen them since. Love to see what you customizers could do with these.

Platinum edition tokidoki Adios and Ciao Ciao. These were STRANGEco SDCC ‘07 exclusives. Dig that silver colorway!

I.W.G. Hannibal the Gorilla and Moly the Mutated Octopus from Rocketworld circa 2005. One of each. Humans beware!

The Wonderfulman from Headlock Studios and Wonderful Toys. Japanese companies mixing with American mascot aesthetics FTW!

Don’t forget, we’re saving lots more warehouse finds from James Jarvis, Nathan J, Mars-1 and more for Wondercon, so be sure to come by booths 944 & 946 this weekend!

    Neon-Monster-Ad-Wondercon

We decided it was time to spill some info about what we’ve been cooking up for Wondercon. Neon Monster’s double-wide booth will feature:

    Awesome Resin Figures!

I can’t tell you how stoked we are about this. We asked a handful of our favorite artists to create exclusive resin figures and/or special colorways just for Neon Monster and Wondercon. I think my head might explode being near a table packed with so much greatness from:

    Exciting Warehouse Finds!

We got together with our friends at STRANGEco to unearth some serious vinyl treasures carbon-dated back to the early-mid 2000s. We’ve got the goods from Nathan Jurevicius, James Jarvis, Mars-1, Tokidoki, Jeremy Fish, Jermaine Rogers, Rocketworld and more.

    Mitch in Many Forms!

Local designer Lauren Venell is creating a 6-foot plush Mitch for you to hug up and have your picture taken with. Meanwhile, you can adopt a 14-inch plush Mitch and have it signed by Reuben Rude. Don’t forget to grab a Mitch T-shirt or some free Mitch stickers while you’re there!

    Signed Stuff!

    • In addition to 3 great rare colorways of Mars-1’s Observer, we’ll have a small amount of signed GID Observers.
    • Matt Furie will present a signed special edition print.
    • Last, but not least, Frank Kozik will be signing Labbits from 12-2PM on Saturday, April 3rd. More info on that to come!

    Free Stuff!

We’ve got Mini Circus Punks from STRANGEco and mini-Miigiis from Spencer Hibert to give away while supplies last.

    Toys, Art Multiples and Comics!

We’ll have plenty of production toys, DIY toys and art multiples on hand, as well as comic sets and special variants.

    Details to Follow!

All week long, we’ll be posting more details and teasers. If you thought you knew the score at Wondercon, take a fresh look at this year’s exhibitors. More toys than ever! We want to give priority to fans who make it out to Wondercon, but we’re keeping those of you in distant locales in mind as well. Check the blog for online ordering info and contests! If you have a blog of your own, please help us spread the word. And come back tomorrow to see the first reveal from the Neon Monster x Wondercon Resin Spotlight.
