Designer Reuben Rude is holding court outside Neon Monster on the corner of Castro and 22nd. We’ve got free mini Circus Punks (including some vintage ones by Reuben himself) and there’s still free beer and free comics. Come hang out and watch a local San Francisco artist do his thing. Photos of Mitch in progress below. If you’re not near us, and you want to read more about Reuben, check out this interview.

I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends

Neon Monster's Big Mitch

Wondercon 2010. At first, it was rather quiet. Even amongst the mini-Mitches.

…And then the doors opened.

My pal Domo stopped by.  It’s always good catching up with him.

Not sure who these guys are, but the one in the striped shirt poked me in the eye. Watch your back at Wondercon 2011, buddy.

Isaac and Jacob Pritzker, co-founders of Neon Monster, stopped by on Saturday. They take good care of me.

Reuben Rude Signing at Wondercon

Reuben Rude x Neon Monster

Reuben Rude, designer of Neon Monster’s Mitch character, and the other monsters in The Bestiary, joined us on Saturday for a signing at Wondercon. Mostly we chatted about pop culture and the interesting career path of Vincent Gallo. When a little girl came to Reuben with a request for Alice in Wonderland, he kept it honest with “sorry, that’s not gonna happen.” I like to think she was ultimately happier with her original monster drawing instead!

Reuben Rude for Ball’s Out

Reuben-Rude-Fight-All-Day

Reuben Rude, the San Francisco designer behind the Bestiary characters and many of the Neon Monster blog banners has a piece (”Fight All Day!”) in the Grass Hut’s Balls Out show. The event begins later this week (aka Wondercon Friday), and there are so many great artists involved. The premise is for everybody to go “ball’s out” on an 18″x18″ (and additionally for 2010, 9″x9″) panel. Previews are starting to leak out, like this one by Tim Biskup, which he’s called a “new old direction.” If I wasn’t going to be at the Moscone Center for Wondercon, I’d definitely trek up to Portland for this! Go check it out if you’re in the area.

Neon Monster Goes to Wondercon

Neon-Monster-Ad-Wondercon

We decided it was time to spill some info about what we’ve been cooking up for Wondercon. Neon Monster’s double-wide booth will feature:

Awesome Resin Figures!

I can’t tell you how stoked we are about this. We asked a handful of our favorite artists to create exclusive resin figures and/or special colorways just for Neon Monster and Wondercon. I think my head might explode being near a table packed with so much greatness from:

Exciting Warehouse Finds!

We got together with our friends at STRANGEco to unearth some serious vinyl treasures carbon-dated back to the early-mid 2000s. We’ve got the goods from Nathan Jurevicius, James Jarvis, Mars-1, Tokidoki, Jeremy Fish, Jermaine Rogers, Rocketworld and more.

Mitch in Many Forms!

Local designer Lauren Venell is creating a 6-foot plush Mitch for you to hug up and have your picture taken with. Meanwhile, you can adopt a 14-inch plush Mitch and have it signed by Reuben Rude. Don’t forget to grab a Mitch T-shirt or some free Mitch stickers while you’re there!

Signed Stuff!

  • In addition to 3 great rare colorways of Mars-1’s Observer, we’ll have a small amount of signed GID Observers.
  • Matt Furie will present a signed special edition print.
  • Last, but not least, Frank Kozik will be signing Labbits from 12-2PM on Saturday, April 3rd. More info on that to come!

Free Stuff!

We’ve got Mini Circus Punks from STRANGEco and mini-Miigiis from Spencer Hibert to give away while supplies last.

Toys, Art Multiples and Comics!

We’ll have plenty of production toys, DIY toys and art multiples on hand, as well as comic sets and special variants.

Details to Follow!

All week long, we’ll be posting more details and teasers. If you thought you knew the score at Wondercon, take a fresh look at this year’s exhibitors. More toys than ever! We want to give priority to fans who make it out to Wondercon, but we’re keeping those of you in distant locales in mind as well. Check the blog for online ordering info and contests! If you have a blog of your own, please help us spread the word. And come back tomorrow to see the first reveal from the Neon Monster x Wondercon Resin Spotlight.

Welcome to the Bestiary

Neon Monster's Bestiary

You didn’t think all this was just for a single Cyclops, did you? Today, Neon Monster opened the doors to its Bestiary, a place where you can go to meet the Neon Monsters. There’s a Doctor who is obsessed with neon, a chicken-obsessed Mouth, a psychedelic Psnail, a proto-robotic Robotephant and a conglomeration of eyeballs with a viscous ectoplasm loosely binding them together aka Panoptes. We hope you like reading their stories, an evolving project of words and ideas by Isaac and Jacob Pritzker, 2D art by Reuben Rude and web design magic by The Neon Hive. Keep a watch on The Bestiary: you never know who or what might pop up.

Circuitous Psnail Comes Alive in Resin

pinksnail

Whoa…to be rendered in resin…an amazing feeling. Neon Monster’s first resin art multiple debuted at Art Basel, and we’re already hoping the snail trail leads to more. The Circuitous Psnail is based on art by the amazing Reuben Rude and fabricated by fantastic LA-based powerhouse, Pretty in Plastic.  The liquid-like translucent resin really lights up as you can see from the photos below (after the jump). We’ve got 5 different colors in an edition of 10 pieces each. Each figure is about 12 inches and carries a significant weight. Please inquire if interested in adopting one. The tree stump coffee table art measures 4′ in diameter by 18 inches tall and can be lit with LEDs. We have two that were sculpted, molded and cast in California at Pretty in Plastic based on designs by John Crowe. Rumor around town is that Buff Monster even lent a hand in casting a stump…

Neon Monster Opens Cave Of Wonders at Art Basel

Neon Monster at F Factory

Neon Monster was invited to participate in a curated cross-pollination of  culture and commerce at this year’s Design Miami. The historic Moore building provided us with an airy atrium (and fancy neighbors) in which to construct our Cave of Wonders. When you emerge onto the second floor, you’ll be greeted by an effigy of Mitch. Step inside and absorb the world we’ve created: it’s one of stalagmites and stalactites, crystalline patterns, glowing tree stumps and jewel-toned snails (that’s me!). Many of our visitors have likened the limited edition experience to being in a candy store. You’ll find hand-picked art multiples by Michael Lau and Daniel Johnston, original art toys by Arbito and Buff Monster, exclusive prints and T-shirts by Dalek, Reuben Rude and Josh Cochran, and so much more. We’ll be at 191 NE 40th Street all month long, so come by and say hi!
